We’re happy to release Zrythm v2.0.0-alpha.2! This release brings chord assistance, musical mode, a new set of arranger editing tools, and a long list of fixes.

This is an alpha release intended for testing and feedback. Many features are still missing or incomplete.

What’s new

Chord assistance:

  • Chord pad panel with preset/scale support, polyphonic audition and undoable editing
  • Chord editor for placing and editing chord objects in progressions
  • Chord suggestion engine that recommends next chords based on the current chord and scale
  • Chord track recording, including triggering chords from the pad

Audio:

  • Musical mode: time-stretch audio clips to follow the project tempo (offline Rubberband), toggleable globally and per clip
  • Source BPM detection from audio file metadata, with automatic tempo estimation when metadata is missing

Arranger tools:

  • Pencil tool for painting objects (Ctrl+drag to paint consecutive ones)
  • Eraser tool (click, drag a rectangle, or right-drag)
  • Cut tool for splitting objects (Alt+click)
  • Ramp tool for drawing linear velocity ramps across MIDI notes
  • Audition tool for playing from the clicked position while held

Tempo map:

  • Editable base tempo and base time signature anchored at the start of the timeline
  • Tempo automation curve drawn behind tempo objects

Workflow & polish:

  • Draggable clip-start, loop-start and loop-end markers on the clip editor ruler
  • Undo/Redo in the Edit menu, showing the next action name
  • Generic parameter editor for plugins without a native UI
  • Open .zpj project files from the file manager or command line
  • MIDI note activity highlighting on piano roll keys
  • Undoable velocity editing with live value labels
  • Alternating bar shading in the arranger
  • Default to dark mode on startup
  • Updated translations (Spanish, Ukrainian, Chinese, German, French, Japanese and more)

Notable fixes:

  • Faders, knobs and balance controls getting stuck when a scroll view takes over the drag
  • Crash from wrapped 32-bit MIDI timestamps after ~50 days of system uptime (Linux ALSA)
  • Incorrect note-offs with overlapping same-pitch MIDI notes
  • Track name field keeping stale text when switching tracks
  • Track selection and selection-of-non-moved-tracks issues when tracks are moved or hidden
  • Failed plugin instantiation leaving broken tracks (an error dialog is now shown)
  • Dock panels resizing smaller than their content

We also renamed “regions” to “clips” throughout the UI and project format.

Note: The website still presents Zrythm v1. Expect an update at a later time.

Building from source

See the build instructions in the README. You’ll need CMake, Qt, and an internet connection for dependency fetching.
