Zrythm v2.0.0-alpha.7 Released

Zrythm v2.0.0-alpha.7 has been released! Highlights: editor functions that transform MIDI notes, audio clips and automation, a reworked startup window, and new track and clip colors.

This is an alpha release intended for testing and feedback. Many features are still missing or incomplete.

What’s new

Editor functions:

  • The Functions menu in the clip editors transforms the current selection in one undo step (#5328)
  • MIDI functions: Crescendo, Flam, Flip Horizontal/Vertical, Legato, Portato, Staccato and Strum
  • Audio functions are non-destructive: Invert Polarity, Reverse, Normalize Peak/RMS and curved Fade In/Out are added to a transform stack you can bypass, reorder, remove or bake
  • Automation functions: Flip Horizontal/Vertical and Flatten
  • Functions with parameters open a dialog and remember the values you used last

Startup window:

  • The project selector opens immediately while plugins scan in the background
  • Recent projects show when they were last saved, with clear and remove actions
  • Creating a project uses a labeled form for the name, location and template
  • A warning appears when no audio device could be opened (#5324)

Colors:

  • Tracks get a default color from their type and show it as a thin strip in the tracklist and mixer
  • A color picker in the track inspector and the new Color… arranger menu sets track and clip colors, with a custom color and a reset to the default
  • Notes, waveforms and automation curves use a deeper, more saturated shade; chord, scale, tempo and time-signature objects use a tinted background; markers are drawn as pennants; muted clips turn gray

Audio storage:

  • Project audio is stored in blocks, and identical audio is kept once
  • Recording is written to disk as it arrives, and backups and Save As copy only the referenced audio
  • Important: projects saved with alpha.6 or earlier use the old audio pool format and do not load in alpha.7. Back them up if you need to open them later.

Notable fixes:

  • An idle project no longer uses a full CPU core
  • Systems without an audio input device can now play back with output-only audio
  • Dragging a plugin into a track during a background scan no longer crashes
  • The new-project location field uses and remembers the folder you choose
  • GNU/Linux AppImages are now also built for aarch64, with the architecture in the file name
